Blog Post #7

This is Malcolm's playlist for the revolt that he staged just to reflect on his accomplishments.
SIDE NOTE: I don't know why but the computer had a typo for the creator and said Connor LaRocca instead of Malcolm. idk

Justification

Money - Pink Floyd: I believe this song especially shows Floyd and Malcolm's negative view on ambition and greed, some major themes of Macbeth. The playlist itself also shows a sort of chronological view of Malcolm and Macduff's journey towards overthrowing Macbeth. It begins here with this song to show the exchange between Macduff and Malcolm about the adverse effects of power and the control that money has over one's life. Pink Floyd's song titled Money is mainly centered about the modern usage, but is still fairly applicable to universal themes. For example, Gilmour says "Money, it's a crime. Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie." This is just indicative of Macbeth's outlook near the end of the play. The song itself is a strong representation of how Malcolm view Macbeth.

War Pigs - Black Sabbath: Similar to Money, War Pigs is another song about some of the absolute worst aspects of modern society. In this context, it represents Malcolm's hatred of Macbeth's bloody tactics to gain power and his willingness to kill to stay in this power position. Within the song, many allusions are made to the Vietnam war, but the general tone/stance considering war and the officials overseeing it is applicable to all forms of violence and power. Chronologically, this song still represents the convincing of Malcolm to take over as king against the tyrant.

Takin' Care of Business - Bachman-Turner Overdrive: BTO's classic Takin' Care of Business is extremely literal. The song itself is simply about a white collar worker doing what he needs to do to pull in the money. For Malcolm, it represents the period between the actual war against Macbeth and him deciding to become the next King. Once decided, he builds an army and makes a plan with Macduff to kill the tyrant by surrounding his castle. These actions just represent Malcolm doing what needs to be done (Takin' Care of Business).

Achilles Last Stand - Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin's ten and a half epic about the mythological hero Achilles is fairly focused on the final battle and death of the hero referenced. However, the story and themes that are raised can be heavily related to that of the last battle of Macbeth. For Malcolm, the death is simply a symbol for Malcolm's loss of innocence and transcendence to Kingship. It's a virtuous battle against "evil." Chronologically, the song can be heavily paralleled to that of the final battle in Macbeth in the Birnam Woods. It may be attempted to link Achilles to that of Macbeth, however the description of Achilles in Greek mythology does not align with Macbeth.

Don't Stop Me Now - Queen: This highly esteemed song by Queen is very significant because of the tone that it portrays. Chronologically, this song would sit during the battle towards the end with Malcolm and Macduff taking the strong upper hand. It's a fairly euphoric song that's representative of the feeling of immortality and indestructibility. This is how Malcolm would have felt following the death of Macbeth.

Award Tour - A Tribe Called Quest: Award Tour is a song about success and the victory lap that one makes after achieving life long dreams. Chronologically, this is the final scene and further after Malcolm has officially taken the title of King. He has a monologue to the rest of the character's present and explains how he claims to be better than the "dead butcher" Macbeth. He will go around the country and ease the problems that Macbeth caused as tyrant. The song Award Tour mainly represents how Malcolm feels about this celebration.

  1. Okay, first off you are not fooling me sly guy. OBVIOUSLY YOU created the playlist and that is why your spotify listed it as being created by Connor LaRocca instead of Malcolm. Nice try but I've been in this game too long to get fooled by some novice illusion magic like that. Level up a bit and then try again. As for your blog post, I thought all of your justifications made perfect sense. One thing I would have liked to see is some more actual lines cited from these songs to strengthen your justifications (as you did for your Money analysis). Other than that it all seems to make sense. Keep up the good work and work on your illusion magic skill.
